For your entire life, you’ve felt the sensation of pins and needles after an arm or leg has “fallen asleep.” This happens after a temporary loss of circulation due to sitting or sleeping in the wrong position. However, if you start experiencing numb and tingling feet or hands for no apparent reason, there’s a chance you’re dealing with a more serious issue. You’ll need to get to the root of the problem so you can seek the right treatment.

To help you out, we’re going over some common causes of numbness and tingling in the feet. This will give you a better understanding of your condition and what action you need to take.

Neuropathy

Over 20 million people in the U.S. suffer from some type of neuropathy. Also called peripheral neuropathy, this nerve condition results from a number of things including diabetes, an injury, chemotherapy, or medication.

Your peripheral nerves send sensory messages to your central nervous system. These signals get carried to the appropriate parts of your body. Neuropathy occurs when there’s a disruption in these signals. This effects sensation and can cause numbness and tingling.

In addition to numbness and tingling in the feet or hands, other symptoms of neuropathy include:

  • extreme sensitivity to touch
  • burning pain in feet, legs, or hands
  • excessively cold feet and/or hands
  • cramping of feet or legs
  • restless leg syndrome
  • loss of balance or coordination
  • loss of sleep due to pain
  • weakness in arms or legs

A qualified chiropractor can provide treatment solutions so you can avoid surgery or prescription medication.

A Pinched Nerve

When a nerve has too much pressure on it from surrounding muscles, bones, or tissue, it can’t function properly. This is referred to as a pinched nerve. In addition to pain, a pinched nerve in your back may cause numbness and tingling in your feet. It may also affect the range of motion you have in certain parts of your body.

Chiropractic is a good way to relieve the inflammation that’s placing pressure on the nerve. A chiropractor can also realign your neck and spine to take tension off the nerve.

Bad Posture

A very common cause of foot numbness and tingling is bad posture. If you sit at a computer for much of the day, this is more likely to happen. Bad posture puts unwanted pressure on the nerves in your back. It also restricts blow flow to your legs and feet.

The numbness and tingling may go away once your stand up and stretch. However, if you consistently slouch, the problem could increase in frequency and duration.

Lower Back Problems

If you suffer from lower back issues, there’s a chance you may start to experience pins and needles in your feet. This could result from a herniated or bulging disc, misalignment of your neck and back, or spinal stenosis.

In many cases, sciatica could be the culprit. This is because the sciatic nerve runs from your lower back to your legs. Once this nerve gets irritated, you’ll likely feel the effects in your lower extremities.

A chiropractor will need to diagnose the issue and form a treatment plan.
