Need help losing weight before the holidays? The busy hectic holidays are approaching fast. You might think you don’t have time to lose that weight. But you do! It won’t even require a strenuous exercise regiment.

The traditional routes of diet and exercise are not effective enough for most people. Add the stress of the holidays, and they’re nearly impossible.

Read on to see how you can lose weight with a program that won’t require you to drastically change your life.

Forget the Diet and Exercise Programs

If you’ve tried to lose weight in the past, you may have had the “plateau” experience. You change your diet and start exercising, only to see your weight just plateau. What happened? Your body became accustomed to your weight loss plan and began to make its own adjustments.

Other factors can derail your efforts, too. If you’re suffering from chronic back or knee pain, getting started with an exercise program can be difficult (if not impossible). Yet, you also know that movement with pain is important and that losing weight could help to ease that pain. It’s a Catch-22, but don’t give up hope. With newer and more effective technology, you can lose weight before the holidays!

Introducing Chirothin and Zerona Laser Therapy

Zerona is a new, non-invasive body contouring procedure. It targets excess fat without the negative side effects associated with some surgical methods. This technology was once used to help assist in liposuction procedures. Researchers found that the cold laser treatment also helped patients to emulsify fat from the:

  • Waist
  • Thighs
  • Hips
  • Arms
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Bra area
  • Knees
  • Ankles

This technology, along with our fat-burning weight loss program, has enabled some patients to lose up to 40 pounds in as little as 6 weeks! Others have reported losing 25 inches in as little as 6 weeks.

How Does Zerona Work?

It’s simple. You lie down in a comfortable position in a relaxed environment while the cold laser does all the work. Since Zerona uses cold laser technology, you’ll feel nothing during the procedure. The only thing you’ll feel is lighter as you exit the treatment area.

The Zerona low-level laser is applied to the targeted areas of the body. This is generally for 20 minutes on the front or anterior side. The same treatment is then applied to the back or posterior side.

Is Zerona Laser Therapy Safe?

Yes. In fact, it’s the only body contouring device of its kind that has been approved safe by the FDA.

Best of all, it’s 100% effective!

You can expect to lose inches from your waist, hips, and thighs in the first two weeks. As an added bonus, losing this weight could be the first step in easing chronic back or knee pain.

You CAN Lose Weight Before the Holidays

Forget the fad diets. You’ll have more success with the Zerona Laser Treatment at the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic in The Villages® and you won’t have to disrupt your life to get results. Plus, the reduction in pain from losing weight will give you a renewed sense of living!

For more information on our effective weight loss program coupled with Zerona Laser Treatment, contact us today. We’ll help you say goodbye to that extra weight before the holidays.

lower-back-pain-1-1200x843.jpg

Do you suffer from lower back pain? If you answered yes, we know that this pain can seem unbearable at times. You’re not alone. Back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide.

It might surprise you to know that there are many common myths about lower back pain and there are ways to heal the pain. Knowing the false information surrounding back pain can help you treat your back the right way. In this article. we’ll debunk five common myths about back pain.

Let’s begin!

1. Lower Back Pain Is Worsened By Movement

At one time, doctors considered total bedrest the most effective way to heal back pain. This is no longer the case, yet the fear around moving with back pain persists.

If you experience back pain, stay on the go. Of course, we’re not telling you to run a marathon but you should try your best to avoid long periods of inactivity. This will only make your pain more intense and unbearable.

Increase your activity little by little. Your back will thank you.

2. Exercise Causes Back Pain or Makes Back Pain More Severe

Back pain should not cause you to stop moving or exercising. Do not skip out on the activities you enjoy.

Exercise is now accepted as one of the most effective ways to treat back pain. This includes weight training.

You can prepare your body and help prevent back pain by beginning any physical activity with stretching and warm-up exercises. Strengthen your back by exercising your core muscles, or your stomach and back. Cardio also helps as it improves your overall fitness.

As with any movement, do not dive in. Build up a tolerance and your ability to perform certain exercises over time.

3. You Need A Firm Mattress

If you’re under the impression that the firmer the mattress, the better for your back, you could cause yourself serious harm. Extra-firm mattresses can cause you more back pain! Why? These types of mattresses put extra pressure on the hips and shoulders. On the flip side, an extra-soft mattress does not provide the support you need. In both instances, you wake up stiff. The pain is not alleviated.

The best mattress for your back is medium-firm. It offers the right amount of support and prevents further injury.

4. Back Pain Comes With Age

Your age does not mean you’re destined for pain. Keeping your body in tip-top shape through regular exercise helps you stay strong, flexible, and pain-free at any age. However, you don’t need to lift heavy weights. For more gentle exercises you can try yoga or pilates. These exercises prove doable for anyone.

5. Sitting Up Straight Alleviates Pain

Hunching over at your desk can cause you lower back pain but so can sitting up straight for long periods of time. Prolonged sitting also causes strain on your lower back. So, what can you do to prevent this strain?

Make sure when sitting for a long time that you have proper lumbar support. If you work long hours in an office setting, stand up, stretch, and walk several times a day. Your muscles will not stiffen and you’ll avoid back pain.

As you can see, there is a lot of false information surrounding lower back pain. Want to learn more about how to alleviate your back pain? Contact us today!

March 12, 2017 Healthy Living

January is the month that the majority of us make big goals designed to improve ourselves. However, even the smallest changes can make a BIG impact on your health.

1. Drink more water

Instead of loading up on sodas that contain excessive sugars and empty calories, grab a glass of water. Water hydrates our body and skin helping it to look smoother and healthier, it also aids with weight loss, increases energy, and keeps our mind alert. But, did you know that drinking more water can also keep your joints strong? Water cushions and lubricates the joints helping them to remain flexible and healthy. Dehydrated joints can cause decreased mobility, joint pain, back pain and arthritis.

2. Eat more fruit and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables provide your body with essential vitamins and minerals essential for good health. They are full of fiber which help keep you full longer. A healthy diet full of fruit and vegetables can help reduce the risk of many diseases including heart disease and hight blood pressure and certain cancers. It also decreases inflammation in the joints which could lead to neck and back pain as well as arthritis.

3. Eat less processed foods

Processed foods typically have a long list of ingredients, preservatives, artificial chemicals, add sugars and sodium, empty calories, and are low in nutrients. They’re bad for your waistline and your health.  Instead, choose more whole foods such as beans, nuts, grains, and fresh fruits and veggies.

4. Get moving

Increase your physical activity. Sitting 6 or more hours per day increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Even a half an hour walk a few times a week can greatly improve your health. Building muscles in your legs can also help to decrease falls.

5. Lose excess weight

Being overweight not only increases your risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers, but it also increases the load on your joints and is a contributing factor to back pain and arthritis.

6. Reduce stress

Everyone has a certain amount of stress in their lives, due to their job, family tension, recurring pain, bills or more. But, too much stress can contribute to health conditions, high blood pressure, heart disease, and other ailments.

7. Make time for family and friends

Social interactions make life more enjoyable and greatly impact our physical and mental health. According to a Harvard study, having an active social life may delay memory loss amongst the older population. A robust social life has also been shown to reduce stress, and help us live longer.

tips for dealing with holiday stress

How to Have a Stress-Free Holiday

Ahhh the holiday season – it’s the most wonderful time of the year…. or something like that. As magical as the holidays are, many Americans are also faced with an increased level of stress – not only mental stress but physical stress as well. Between holiday shopping, seeing family, holiday traffic, and all the parties that aren’t so diet friendly, this time of year can certainly take a toll on your mental and physical wellbeing. Follow these tips to help manage your stress in the coming weeks.

Increase your Sunlight Exposure

Studies have shown that between 10-20% of Americans suffer from some sort of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Fortunately, for many of us in The Villages, Florida, we get plenty of sunlight but with all of the Holiday to-do’s this time of year we may not be spending enough time outside which can have an impact on your health and wellness.

Because of this, it’s never been more important to spend time outdoors. The Vitamin D found in sunlight increases serotonin, which can greatly improve your mood. Be sure to spend a little time outside or near a sunny window!

Exercise

If you struggle with high blood pressure, the two biggest factors that can increase your blood pressure are poor eating habits high-stress levels. You might also recognize that these are two things that are certainly abundant around this time of year.

Not only can exercising lower your overall blood pressure and anxiety levels, but it’s also extremely important for maintaining a healthy body. If you suffer from back pain or joint pain, moderate exercise such as biking and jogging can do wonders to relieve your pain.

Furthermore, exercising outdoors can allow you to get that wonderful Vitamin D we talked about above!

Keep your Daily Routine

One thing that can drastically lower your stress levels is keeping a routine. Routines can certainly be hard this time of year, especially if you’ll be travelling. If you’re going out of town this holiday season, be sure to make arrangements to squeeze in your daily routines – whether that’s your morning coffee and newspaper or walking the dog. During the craziness of the holidays, your routines might be the only constant you have – don’t sacrifice them.

Turn off the Distractions

For many people, the Holiday season is the busiest time of the year, especially when it comes to work. The fiscal year is coming to a close, you have to work extra hard to make up for the time you’ll lose during your Christmas break, the list goes on and on. This time of year, it’s never been more important to leave work at work. If possible, turn off your phone and don’t check your email during your break. Whatever it is can wait until you’re back at work. Focus on spending quality time with your loved ones.

Volunteer

Of all the things we’ve talked about, nothing is as beneficial as giving your time to something beyond yourself – and what better opportunity to volunteer than Christmas! Ring the Bell for the Salvation Army or check out VolunteerMatch to explore the perfect organization to volunteer your time.

Give in to Temptations

If you’re trying to lose weight nothing is worse than all of the food at the Holiday parties. Instead of worrying about over-eating or denying yourself, eat a salad or other veggies before heading out and allow yourself to eat a small plate while at the party. And, be careful of the beverages, one glass of one can have over 150 calories! Alternating between alcoholic beverages and water can not only help your waistline but can help you avoid a hangover as well!

Pain Relief

For many people, the holiday season means can be an all time high for back pain, neck pain, and other joint pain – many times brought on by stress. If you’re one of the millions of Americans who suffer from chronic pain, take time to relieve your pain. The Davis Clinic of Chiropractic in The Villages community is devoted to the nonsurgical treatment of chronic pain. It’s time to get back on the road to recovery and the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic can help you do just that. Give us a call at (352) 430 – 2121 today.

obesity and back pain

How Weight Loss Can Help Reduce Back Pain

By now, you’ve probably heard all about the negative effects of being overweight – risk of heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, and trouble breathing, to name a few. But, now there is one more side effect to add to the list – back pain.

Body Fat’s Effect on Joints

The American Obesity Association recently found that musculoskeletal pain (such as back pain) is 20% more likely to occur in those who are classified as obese.

Your body puts up with a lot on any given day. Each extra pound adds to the stress on your spine, which puts additional pressure on the soft tissue around your vertebrae. And, being overweight can shift your body’s center of gravity forward, which puts excess strain on your back muscles.

Along with the additional stress that goes along with weight gain, excess fat can also cause your spine to become unnaturally curved as it pulls your pelvis forward, which causes forward pressure on your spine.

Body Fat’s Effect on Your Body’s Natural Chemicals

Not only does belly fat put additional strain on your spine, it also causes excess release of inflammatory chemicals in your body. One of these chemicals is known as cortisol – a stress-induced chemical that promotes the storage of fat and increases the number of fat cells. Each of these fat cells releases inflammatory chemicals which weaken discs in the spine.

Not only do inflammatory chemicals slowly break down your spine, they also increase the risk of Metabolic Syndrome – a common precursor to heart disease and diabetes.

How to Reduce Back Pain Caused by Excess Weight

If you suffer from back pain, there’s a very real chance that it could be exacerbated by excess weight. If this is the case, then the best way to ease back pain is to start losing weight. But don’t take our word for it – Chiropractor, Dr. Jason Davis of the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic in The Villages® community says:

“Staying within ten pounds of your recommended weight can do wonders for your spine. Some back pain may be avoidable –simply by maintaining a healthy weight.”

How do you maintain a healthy weight, you ask? The answer is much simpler than most would like – eat less and move more. But, it’s not just eating less, it’s eating less of the wrong foods and eating more of the right foods. Including anti-inflammatory foods to help fight pain. Unfortunately, there’s no miracle pill or overnight cure.

Maintaining a healthy weight may be hard, but you do not have to do it alone! how sitting is hurting your health

Sitting Is the New Smoking

By now, you’re probably aware of all of the negative health effects of smoking. Among other issues, smoking can cause heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, increased plaque in the arterial walls, and back pain. But did you know that sitting for prolonged periods of time can also cause these same conditions?

Think about how much time you spend sitting on a daily basis. Factor in your commute to and from work or play, time spent sitting at a computer or on your phone, watching television, or just lounging. According to a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, over half of the average person’s waking hours are spent sitting, and this sedentary behavior is hazardous to our health and our bodies.

Coronary Artery Disease

Studies have shown that the risk of developing coronary artery disease drastically increases in those individuals who sit for long periods of time during the day. Researchers found that every hour of sitting increases your coronary artery calcification by 14 percent! This calcification severely increases your risk for a heart attack!

What’s worse is that studies showed the correlation between calcification and exercise! That means that not even daily exercise is enough to combat the negative effects of sitting all day.

Diabetes

Every hour you spend sitting increases your risk of diabetes by 22 percent, even if you exercise regularly. Evidence shows that being sedentary has a negative effect on glucose levels and increases insulin resistance.

“When we sit for long periods of time, enzyme changes occur in our muscles that can lead to increased blood sugar levels,” says Emma Wilmot, MD. “The effects of sitting on glucose happen very quickly, which is why regular exercise won’t fully protect you,” she says.

Back Pain

Sitting for prolonged periods of time also has a negative impact on your spine as well. It causes stress on the joints, especially in the low back. “Sitting puts almost twice the amount of stress on the spine as standing,” says Dr. Davis of the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic. “Hunching forward increases the pressure even more. Your joints need to move in order to get the proper nutrition to the spinal discs and to keep them hydrated. Immobility starves the discs of vital nutrients.”

If you’re already suffering from back pain, sitting can exasperate your condition.

What You Can Do

Fortunately, there is a way to almost completely offset the negative effects of sitting all day, and the answer is easier than you might think. Studies have shown that two minutes of light-intensity activity every hour reduces the risk of death by over 33%! If you spend most of your day behind a desk, it’s extremely important to take some time each hour to do some light exercise.

Ways to Get up and Get Moving

  • Take the stairs
  • Park at the far end of the parking lot
  • Wear a Pedometer or a FitBit and try to increase your steps each week
  • If possible, deliver a message in person rather than emailing a coworker
  • Set an alarm to remind you to get up every hour and walk around or change activities
  • Limit watching TV to 1 hour a day
  • Find new hobbies that don’t involve sitting
  • Start a walking club with your friends
  • Instead of driving to the store, walk if possible
  • Invest in a standing desk or table for the office

“Today’s more modernized offices are concerned – now more than ever—with the health and well-being of its employees. Office furniture is adapting to meet the needs of a more health-conscious office worker, and that starts with the standing desk,” says Brent Stoller of Workspace Solutions. ”Standing desks allow the user to combat a lot of the negative health effects that are facing society today due to long-term sitting.”

Bottom Line

The effects of prolonged sitting are not reversible. Just like smoking, sitting is bad for our health and the only way to combat it is to get off our butts. Sit less, do more!

staying positive with chronic pain

Living with Chronic Back Pain

If you suffer from chronic back pain, it can affect every aspect of your life. Aside from the physical pain, living with chronic back pain can bring about feelings of anxiety, stress, hopelessness, and depression. Although chronic pain can leave you feeling angry or depressed, it’s important to remember that a positive attitude can make all the difference in the world. If it seems like your chronic pain is too much to handle, here are a few ways to stay positive despite chronic back pain.

1. Maintain an Active Lifestyle

Although back pain can make it hard to stay active, regular exercise is not only the best way to stay positive, but it can also reduce your back pain symptoms. The next time you start to experience back pain, try going for a walk. Don’t underestimate the power of getting outside and enjoying the beauty of nature. Mild exercise helps you take your mind off the pain, along with stretching out tight muscles. Studies have shown that mood enhances after only five minutes of moderate exercise.

2. Stay Busy

Along with physical activity, keeping yourself busy can greatly increase your psychological wellbeing. If your back pain is keeping you from hobbies you once enjoyed, then pick up some new hobbies that aren’t as physically demanding. The less time you have to sit around, the better. One great hobby you can pick up is volunteering! Spend some more time doing what you’re passionate about! Volunteer at a local animal shelter, hospitals, or church. Not only are you helping out the community, but you’re also doing wonders for your own well-being. Helping other people takes some of the focus away from yourself, which can greatly reduce some of the anxiety and pain.

3. Be Creative

Studies have shown that exercising your creativity can be one of the best things you can do for your mind. Rather than watching television, spend some time doing something creative! Try painting, playing an instrument, writing, anything! Not only will this help to take your mind off of things, but it’s also a fun and productive alternative to television.

4. Get Outside

If you’re struggling with depression and anxiety, the answer might just lie in your own back yard. Studies have shown that your brain produces more serotonin on bright, sunny days (which we have plenty of in The Villages, FL!) than darker ones. Serotonin is a natural anti-depressant, which can greatly improve your mood and your overall mental health. If you’re feeling like you’re in a funk, try going outside and catching some rays!

5. See a Professional

You don’t have to live with chronic pain. Dr. Jason Davis of the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic in The Villages, Florida helps patients suffering with chronic back pain everyday. If you or someone you know is suffering with chronic back or neck pain, give us a call at (352) 430-2121. Dr. Davis can help you relieve your pain, so you can get your life back! If back pain is causing you anxiety or depression or ruining your relationship with family and friends, then it’s time to start fighting back!

Don’t Forget the Sunscreen!

Sun and fun, that’s the reason most of us live in The Villages, Florida! Whether you’re playing a round of golf, relaxing by the lake, or taking a dip in the pool, it’s important to protect yourself from the sun! Here are a few ways to help you stay safe while enjoying the outdoors.

Slip, Slop, Slap, Wrap

If you’re going to be out in the sun, the best way to protect yourself from harmful UV Rays, the American Cancer Society suggests that you Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap!

  1. Slip on a Shirt
  2. Slop on some Sunscreen
  3. Slap on a hat
  4. Wrap on some sunglasses to protect your eyes

Remember that saying – it could save you from a lot of pain! Did you know that the risk for developing melanoma doubles for people who have had five or more sunburns? That’s pretty scary, considering many people get a sunburn each and every year!

Get in the Shade

If at all possible, seek shady areas as much as possible. Shade helps to limit your exposure to direct UV rays, which can make a huge difference. Keep in mind that UV light is strongest between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM. Between these hours is when it’s most important to seek shade and protection from UV light.

Protect Your Skin

If you’re going to be out in direct sunlight for extended periods of time, the best way to fight harmful UV rays is sunscreen. Be sure to apply 1 ounce of sunscreen at least 30 minutes before you go outside, and then reapply every two hours that you’re outside. Even water-proof sunscreen begins to fade after a couple of hours.

Be sure to use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. SPF 15 Sunscreen blocks 93% of UV rays, while SPF 30 blocks 97% of UV rays. The higher the SPF level, the more protection.

Check out this video to see how sunscreen protects you from the sun.

A Healthy Glow Without Harmful Effects

Although we all know the risks of tanning, we still want a little color. To get a healthy glow without running the risk of overexposure to harmful UV rays, stick to a good self tanning lotion. However, keep in mind that tanning lotion is not meant to act as a substitute for sunscreen; it will not protect you from the sun. It will, however, give your skin a great looking glow and a darker appearance.

Now that you know how to properly protect yourself against the sun, it’s time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather! From your friends at Davis Clinic of Chiropractic, stay safe and have fun!

How to Achieve a Complete Lifestyle Change this Summer

Summer is finally here in The Villages, Florida! And with the new season comes a great new opportunity for a lifestyle change! Whether you suffer from back or neck pain, or would just like to get healthier, everyone could benefit from a lifestyle change! If you need to make some changes, here are 3 simple ways you can achieve a healthier lifestyle.

Change the Way you Think

Getting in shape and achieving a healthier, happier lifestyle isn’t as hard as you might think! The key is to think about lifestyle change in terms of small steps, as opposed to one drastic lifestyle change. Thinking about change in such drastic measures can be intimidating, which can discourage you from reaching your goals.

Lifestyle change starts with a change in mindset. A new, healthier you is absolutely attainable; it’s all about leaving bad habits behind, and replacing them with good ones! One step at a time!

Change the Way you Eat

One simple change is to make better choices when it comes to eating. You have probably heard the term, “you are what you eat.” This is truer than you might think. If you fill your body with “junk,” you’re probably going to feel like junk.

Keep in mind, a lifestyle change is much different than a diet! It’s much more than that – much more impactful. You don’t have to cut out the foods you like in order to be healthier; it’s just about making small changes and better choices.

If you are prone to snacking throughout the day, next time you are at the grocery store, pick up some healthier, low calorie snacks you can switch out for your usual snacks. A healthier you isn’t so much about cutting down on your food intake, as much as it is paying attention to what kind of foods you allow to put in your body. Be creative when it comes to diet change – you never know what kind of new foods you may like.

A healthy diet can not only affect the way you look, but it also plays a big role in how you feel too! And, did you know that a healthy diet could also help with pain relief?

Change the Way You Move

When it comes to adopting a new lifestyle, many people are intimidated by the notion of exercise. But the truth is, getting healthier isn’t as hard as you think! When you think of exercise, you probably picture things like going to the gym and running on a treadmill for hours. In reality, successful exercise doesn’t have to be that big of a commitment. Studies show that short spurts of high intensity workouts are more efficient than longer, medium intensity. For example, 10 minutes of jumping rope is more beneficial than 20 minutes of walking.

Exercise comes in all forms – walking, golfing, tennis, jogging, swimming – anything that gets you moving! So, find something you enjoy and stick to it. There are many benefits to exercise besides weight loss. It can also ward of pain and disease, improve mobility, and increase energy. It’s also important to stay active as we age.

Make a change for a healthier you. There’s no better time to start than today!
