There are several myths about back pain floating around, but here’s something that isn’t a myth: Weight gain and back pain can go hand in hand.

If you think about it, the correlation between the two isn’t necessarily surprising. Every pound you lug around is a pound that your skeletal system has to support. That system can collapse if the pressure becomes too much to bear.

Not literally, but you get the point, right? Bad posture. Back pain. The works.

So what is the exact relationship between back pain and weight gain? We’ve got the scoop.

Weight Gain and Your Upper Back

As we indicated above, the spine bears the burden of the weight you carry. When you’re carrying too much weight, your upper spine won’t straighten out the same way it did before you packed on the extra pounds.

So what does this look like?

To put things simply, the curvature of your spine might become abnormal. You might be tempted to lean your head forward to allow your spine to compensate for the extra weight you’ve gained, which could give you a sort of hunched appearance.

That new curvature worsens over time, and, sadly, your back pain worsens with it.

Weight Gain and Your Lower Back

Weight gain also has an effect on your lower back, though the mechanics are a bit different than the ones mentioned above. Belly fat (not just general weight gain) is the primary culprit in this case.

Understand that your belly is the core of your body. A strong core can do the body wonders while a weak, heavy one can do harm.

Your belly is above your pelvis, so whenever you gain weight in that area, your pelvis is going to bear that load. Once that load becomes too heavy to handle, your body has to find some way to carry it. Unfortunately, the solution is usually to push the hips forward.

But how does this affect your lower back?

Well, when your hips just forward, your lower back must do the same. This means that the alignment of your spine becomes a bit wonky as time progresses.

And guess what? That misalignment eventually leads to lower back pain.

Prevention

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Few people, if any, want to live with back pain for the rest of their lives. In order to avoid doing so, they have to lead active, healthy lifestyles.

Exercise is a great tool for those who wish to prevent back pain. Not only that, but it’s great for people who already have back pain as well.

Diet is even more important than exercise. It can help people keep extra weight at bay, which is extremely important since we’ve already established that weight gain and back pain have a strong correlation.

Fighting Weight Gain and Back Pain

As you can see, fighting weight gain can be the same thing as fighting back pain. Of course, that’s easier said than done. No one is so perfect that weight gain is outside of the realm of possibility.

How Weight Loss Can Help Reduce Back Pain

By now, you’ve probably heard all about the negative effects of being overweight – risk of heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, and trouble breathing, to name a few. But, now there is one more side effect to add to the list – back pain.

The American Obesity Association recently found that musculoskeletal pain (such as back pain) is 20% more likely to occur in those who are classified as obese.
