Sciatica refers to pain felt along the length of the sciatic nerve which runs down your back, through your buttocks, and into your leg. Sciatic pain which is typically felt in the buttocks, where it radiates down the back of the thigh and into the leg.
Quite often, leg pain or foot pain does not mean that there is a problem with the leg or foot, but rather that there is a problem in the lower back such as a bulging or herniated disc in the spine that is pressing on the roots of the sciatic nerve causing pain and possibly other symptoms to radiate to the leg or the foot.
Sciatica can cause chronic pain that starts in the back and radiates through the buttocks and down one leg into the foot.
Sciatica is most commonly caused by a herniated or bulging disc. Spinal stenosis may also be a cause of sciatica. It’s important to understand is that sciatica is the symptom of a problem, not a medical diagnosis or disorder. This is an important distinction because it is the underlying cause of sciatica that often needs to be treated in order to relieve sciatic nerve pain.
