Your Radiating Pain Could be Sciatica
What is Sciatia?
The pain you feel starting at your buttocks and radiating down through your leg to your feet could be sciatica. Quite often leg pain or foot pain does not mean that there is a problem in your foot or leg, but rather that there is a problem in your low back causing pain and possibly other symptoms.
Sciatica refers to the pain felt along the length of the sciatic nerve. The pain is usually felt in the buttock where it radiates down the leg.
Causes of Sciatica
It’s important to understand that sciatica is a symptom of a problem. Something could be compressing or irritating the nerve roots that comprise the sciatic nerve. If you suddenly start to feel pain in your lower back or hip that radiates to the back of your thigh and into your leg, you may have a protruding or herniated disc in your spinal column that is pressing on the roots of the sciatic nerve.
Sciatica can also be caused by degenerative disc disease or a misalignment of the spine resulting in the compression of the sciatic nerve.
Symptoms of Sciatica
Common symptoms of sciatica can include:
- Muscle weakness
- Burning pain, numbness or tingling down the leg
- Pain that travels from the lower back into the buttocks and down the back of the thigh
- Significant leg pain.
