Although chronic pain can leave you feeling angry or depressed, it’s important to remember that a positive attitude can make all the difference in the world. If it seems like your chronic pain is too much to handle, here are a few ways to stay positive despite chronic back pain.

1. Maintain an Active Lifestyle

Although back pain can make it hard to stay active, regular exercise is not only the best way to stay positive, but it can also reduce your back pain symptoms. The next time you start to experience back pain, try going for a walk. Don’t underestimate the power of getting outside and enjoying the beauty of nature. Mild exercise helps you take your mind off the pain, along with stretching out tight muscles. Studies have shown that mood enhances after only five minutes of moderate exercise.

2. Stay Busy

Along with physical activity, keeping yourself busy can greatly increase your psychological wellbeing. If your back pain is keeping you from hobbies you once enjoyed, then pick up some new hobbies that aren’t as physically demanding. The less time you have to sit around, the better. One great hobby you can pick up is volunteering! Spend some more time doing what you’re passionate about! Volunteer at a local animal shelter, hospitals, or church. Not only are you helping out the community, but you’re also doing wonders for your own well-being. Helping other people takes some of the focus away from yourself, which can greatly reduce some of the anxiety and pain.

3. Be Creative

Studies have shown that exercising your creativity can be one of the best things you can do for your mind. Rather than watching television, spend some time doing something creative! Try painting, playing an instrument, writing, anything! Not only will this help to take your mind off of things, but it’s also a fun and productive alternative to television.

4. Get Outside

Studies have shown that your brain produces more serotonin on bright, sunny days (which we have plenty of in The Villages, FL!) than darker ones. Serotonin is a natural anti-depressant, which can greatly improve your mood and your overall mental health. If you’re feeling like you’re in a funk, try going outside and catching some rays!
