Numbness and tingling throughout your legs or arms. Weakening muscles that make it hard to lift things, or even walk. Chronic pain in your leg, buttocks or neck.

Sounds pretty awful right?

This is what people suffering from a herniated disc often endure, day in and day out. Some people may not even know they have the condition. But for many, it can be debilitating. So what is a herniated disc and what are some treatment options? Read on to find out.

What is a herniated disc and how do I know if I have one?

herniated disc occurs when the fluid between two discs becomes displaced. This irritates the nerves surrounding the spinal column. The most common symptom of this condition is extreme back pain and discomfort.

If pain becomes intolerable or debilitating, a professional medical opinion should be sought. Other severe symptoms include numbness and tingling in your extremities or weakness.

Potential Causes

Herniated discs are most often caused by disc degeneration. This is basic wear and tear on your body. As a person ages, discs in their back lose some of the fluid that helps keep them flexible. Tiny cracks or breaks in the disc allow the internal gel to bulge outside of the disc, causing a herniation.

This can also happen due to a sudden heavy strain placed on the lower back, or prolonged stress on this area of your body.

Common Treatments

There are some common, non-surgical options that can help. These treatments may solve the issue in as few as 4-6 weeks. Treatments include heat and ice application, therapeutic massage or chiropractic care. Patients may also consider medication treatment. However, taking pain medication is not for everyone and comes with the risk of dependency over time.

Steroid injections can also be used to treat back pain. This method involves an injection directly into a patient’s spine. Steroids help reduce swelling, in turn, reducing pain. But keep in mind, steroids often mask the pain, they don’t cure it and leave you at risk of further injury.

Surgery Options and Risk

Surgery means an minvasive procedure where doctors remove the herniated part of the disc under the nerve root. This provides the nerve root more space, relieving pressure and allowing the root to heal.

Like all surgeries, there are risks involved. Potential risks include bleeding, infection and bowel incontinence. There is also the chance that surgery will not fix the issue, but instead, make it worse.

A 2010 study showed that as many as 74% of all back surgeries were unsuccessful. Post-surgery patients also reported an increase in pain and use of pain medication. Some required another surgery in as little as 2-3 years.

DRS Protocol

DRS Protocol, or Decompression, Reduction, and Stabilization, is another non-surgical treatment option that has been very effective in the treatment of herniated discs. The DRS Protocol includes several treatment modalities including spinal decompression, chiropractic care, nutrition, and other treatments customized for each patient’s unique condition.

With DRS, each patient is assessed and treated based on individual needs. And is a great alternative to harmful medications, surgery, or other invasive procedures.

What is Spinal Decompression and How Can it Help Relieve Back Pain

what is spinal decompressionSpinal decompression. If you suffer from lower back pain, you might have heard of spinal decompression. Spinal decompression is one of the many therapies used in our DRS Protocol treatment for back pain and neck pain. Before you decide to undergo any sort of treatment for chronic pain relief, it’s always a good idea to do some research into what the treatment will consist of. In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about spinal decompression therapy, and we’ll even walk you through what you can expect from a therapy session.

What is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal Decompression is a nonsurgical treatment that relieves back pain by taking pressure off the spinal discs. This is achieved by gently stretching the spine, which introduces negative pressure in the discs, relieving pressure. Once pressure is taken off of the discs, water and oxygen are able to move freely around the discs, which will jumpstart your body’s natural healing. Spinal Decompression Therapy has been found successful in relieving a wide variety of spinal conditions including:

  • herniated or bulging discs
  • degenerative disc disease
  • back pain
  • neck pain
  • sciatica

It is also one of the many treatment modalities used in the DRS Protocol™ which has been highly effective for the relief of chronic pain conditions.

What is The DRS Protocol™

Spinal Decompression is a very beneficial treatment option that has seen some pretty amazing results. Because of this, the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic in The Villages® community has chosen to include it in their highly successful, nationally recognized DRS Protocol™. The DRS Protocol™ is a highly successful, drug-free, nonsurgical treatment that has helped thousands of patients get relief from back pain and neck pain.

How does the DRS Protocol™ Work?

alternative to back surgery

Finding a Successful Alternative to Surgery

If you suffer from chronic back pain, you may have tried everything to relieve the pain. You might have even been told that surgery is the only option. However, surgery is not the only treatment for back pain. Many patients have found relief with the DRS Protocol — a successful, alternative to back surgery for herniated discs, degenerative discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis and other back pain conditions.

Back Surgery

Surgery is expensive, risky, invasive, and typically involves a lengthy rehabilitation process. And, after going through this painful procedure, there are no guarantees that you’ll get relief from your pain.

Patients who have undergone back surgery report only a slight drop in pain after surgery. The need for additional surgeries is typical within 2-3 years as pain returns. Due to these factors, along with the risk of complications that can arise due to spine surgery, many patients are seeking non-surgical treatments to relieve their pain.

Non-Surgical Back Pain Relief

Fortunately, there is a non-surgical back pain treatment that has proven to be effective in the fight against chronic pain. The Davis Clinic of Chiropractic in The Villages® community has helped thousands of patients successfully relieve their back pain with the DRS Protocol™ and is one of only a handful of chiropractic clinics in the United States that has been certified to use the highly successful, treatment.

What is the DRS Protocol?

The DRS Protocol™ is a non-surgical, drug-free treatment that has been proven to reduce back pain and neck pain using completely safe, all-natural methods.

The DRS Protocol™ incorporates spinal decompression as well as multiple treatment protocols specific to each patient’s condition to remove pressure from the disc, promote the intake of water, oxygen, and nutrients to rehydrate the affected disc, and increase mobility and tissue healing while relieving the pain.

The DRS Protocol is an amazingly effective treatment that attacks the root of the problem instead of masking the problem. No surgery. No painkillers. Just results.

Are you a Candidate for the DRS Protocol?

The DRS Protocol™ is a versatile therapy for neck or back pain that promotes healing in a wide variety of conditions, including:

  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Herniated Discs
  • Neck Pain
  • Low Back Pain
  • Sciatica
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Failed Back Surgery Pain

herniated disc treatment

Best Treatment for a Herniated Disc

According to the American Chiropractic Association, low back pain – which affects 70-85 percent of all people at some point in their lives – is the 5th most common reason for doctor’s visits and contributes to more than $50 billion in annual spending in the U.S. alone.

A Common Cause of Back Pain

A very common cause of back pain can be attributed to a herniated disc, which occurs when the rubbery cushion (disc) between two spinal vertebrae bulges outside of the spinal column and irritates the surrounding nerves.

The pain associated with herniated discs can be severe and can significantly impact the lives of people who suffer from this medical condition. With many treatment options available – some being much riskier and costlier than others – patients often find themselves overwhelmed when beginning a back pain diagnosis and treatment plan.

Herniated Disc Treatment

The most common herniated disc treatment options include:

  • Pain medication
  • Heat/ice application
  • Manual manipulation/Chiropractic Care
  • Therapeutic massage
  • Exercise/physical therapy
  • Spinal decompression / DRS Protocol
  • Spinal injections
  • Spinal surgery

Typical treatment for a herniated disc involves pain management therapy, however, many patients experience chronic low back pain that can last for months or years and they require more active treatment options to prevent long-term pain, disability, and drug dependence.

Risks of Back Surgery

When standard pain management treatment fails and active treatment is required, many doctors recommend spinal surgery to repair a herniated disc. However, the risks associated with back surgery can sometimes outweigh the benefits. According to spine-health.org, though rare, some of the risks and complications of back surgery include:

  • Dural tear (cerebrospinal fluid leak) – this occurs in 1% to 2% of these surgeries, does not change the results of surgery, but post-operatively the patient may be asked to lay recumbent for one to two days to allow the leak to seal.
  • Nerve root damage
  • Bowel/bladder incontinence
  • Bleeding
  • Infection

In addition to the surgical complication risks, spinal surgery for herniated disc repair can also result in 6 weeks or more of restricted activity, missed work, and high medical costs that can put patients into debt. As with any treatment, there is no guarantee of success with spinal surgery. 5-10% of patients will develop a herniated disc recurrence within 3 months of surgery, according to spine-health.org.

Non-surgical Herniated Disc Treatment

The risks and costs associated with back surgery have left many patients looking to alternative, less invasive treatment options for their back pain. The DRS Protocol™ which utilizes spinal decompression and other therapies customized for each patient, has become an increasingly popular treatment for back pain associated with a herniated disc as this method requires no surgery, no addictive medications, is virtually pain-free, and has a high rate of success in significantly reducing or even eliminating back pain with outpatient treatment.

“I was in so much pain in my lower back and legs when I first came to Davis Clinic of Chiropractic for treatments in May. I had difficulty walking and bending over. After a few weeks the improvement was incredible.” – Gwendalyn

The DRS Protocol™

The DRS Protocol™ (DRS stands for Decompression, Reduction, Stabilization) is described by Dr. Richard E. Busch III, Fort Wayne chiropractor and developer of the DRS Protocol™, as a non-invasive combination of spinal decompression, chiropractic manipulation, nutritional therapy, targeted exercise, and the mind-body relationship where each patient is self-assessed and treated individually to ensure optimal results.

The DRS Protocol has helped thousands of herniated disc patients regain active and pain-free lifestyles and is rapidly becoming a widely accepted alternative back pain treatment option. The non-surgical, drug-free, and pain-free DRS Protocol treatment is available in Central Florida only at the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic The Villages, Florida.

what i learned from patientsWhat I’ve Learned From Listening to Neck and Back Pain Patients

If you suffer from chronic back pain, you are not alone. In fact, 31 million Americans experience lower back pain at any given time. During my time in practice, I have successfully treated patients suffering with back pain or neck pain and began to notice a trend in what they were telling me. Here are a few things I learned from listening to my patients.

They’ve Tried it All

After suffering from chronic back pain for months or even years, many of my patients have tried everything in order to relieve their pain. Unfortunately, the treatments didn’t work and they continued to suffer. They’ve tried painkillers to dull the pain which only left them groggy and back in pain when the medications wore off. Many worried about becoming addicted to the pain medications. They’ve tried steroid injections that either didn’t help or helped for a short time before the pain returned. Many had even been recommended surgery for their neck or back pain or suffer with failed back surgery syndrome.

They’ve Been Told Surgery is the Only Option

If you’ve seen a doctor about your back pain, you may have been told that surgery is the only option. Traditionally, doctors treat back pain with epidurals or surgery. The truth is, these invasive procedures don’t always work and should be left as a last resort. They can be dangerous, expensive, and can leave you with a long recovery time.

There are many treatments available for back and neck pain, however, most only temporarily dull the pain or may leave you in more pain than when you started. Dangerous painkillers, epidurals, and surgeries may only offer temporary relief.

They are Depressed

When it comes to back pain, dealing with the pain is only the tip of the iceberg. There are many effects that back pain produces, including decreased quality of life. You wouldn’t believe how many patient’s I’ve seen that used to lead active lives who were forced to quit their favorite activities due to pain. Even everyday activities such as cleaning the house, grocery shopping, gardening, or playing with their grandchildren are made difficult due to chronic pain. They had become withdrawn and no longer enjoyed their lives.

You Don’t Have to Accept Back Pain

Do you feel that back pain is just a part of getting older? Whereas back pain may be more evident in adults than in younger people, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they go hand-in-hand. There are some simple steps you can take in order to help rid yourself of back pain.

Natural Pain Relief

First, start by maintaining good posture. If you have a “sit down” job where you are at your desk all day, make sure your chair is ergonomically correct. In other words, make sure the chair is set up right for your height and job function. If you work on a computer most of the day, your computer screen should be at eye level. The chair should be set so that both feet are able to touch the floor.

Next, limit the amount of time you spend in bed. Studies show that people who are more active on a daily routine tend to feel less pain than those who stay in bed. Staying in bed may provide temporary relief. However, the long term effects are stiffness and soreness.

 Exercises for Back Pain Relief

Exercising is another remedy that has great side benefits. In addition to keeping your muscles limber, it will improve your blood circulation and help you maintain a healthy weight. Be careful not to overdo the exercises. Avoid bending and twisting as those activities may have been what caused the back pain to begin with. A simple walk is a good way to start your exercise routine.

Using cold and hot packs can help reduce the pain as well. If your back pain is due to an injury, use ice for the first 48 hours to reduce the swelling then switch to heat. The heat will provide a soothing effect that will comfort the muscles and provide for extended relief.

Non-Surgical Back and Neck Pain Treatment

Finally, if you have severe or chronic back pain, see a professional. Doctors, such as Dr. Jason Davis of the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic, in the Villages, Florida , specializes in the diagnoses and treatment of back pain conditions that are causing you discomfort, such as herniated discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis, and more. Dr. Davis is highly trained in treating back pain without surgery, epidurals, or other invasive treatments, including the highly effective, DRS Protocol.

Remember, just because we are getting older, does not mean that we have to accept the aches and pains that some may say are symptoms of getting older. Following these simple techniques and obtaining the advice of a professional chiropractor may be the answer to enjoying a productive and pain free lifestyle. If you are tired of living with pack pain, call the Villages Chiropractor, Dr. Jason Davis today at (352) 430-2121.
