Life Changing Pain Relief in The Villages® Community

Here at the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic in The Villages® community, we don’t just relieve chronic pain, we give people a second chance at a pain-free life. If you or someone you know struggles with chronic pain either from a back or neck pain condition, neuropathy, or knee pain, you know that it’s not just a mild annoyance – it can be a devastating disease that eats away at both your physical and mental well-being where even getting out of bed in the morning is a struggle.

If this sounds like you – chances are, you would trade anything for just a single day of pain relief. Because of this, many people have taken drastic measures to reduce their pain. Some of these extreme methods include invasive surgeries, steroid injections, and addictive drugs.

A 2010 study showed that as many as 74% of back surgeries were unsuccessful. Furthermore, people that underwent back surgery saw a 41% increase in the use of painkillers post-surgery. These statistics show that not only is back surgery unsuccessful in most cases, but it can worsen the effects of pain!

Side Effects of Taking Pain Killers for Back Pain or Neck Pain

pillsImagine this: you wake up in the morning after a long night of tossing and turning. You slowly hobble to the bathroom to get ready for the day. You reach down to grab your toothbrush and OUCH! A sharp pain hits you square in the back. Maybe you slept wrong. Maybe you overdid it while planning golf or tennis. Maybe your mattress is too soft – all you know is that you need something to stop the pain. So you reach for aspirin bottle and pop a few. Have you ever stopped to think – what if those little pills, or prescription painkillers, are doing more harm than they are good? Before you reach for the pill bottle, learn about some of the side effects of taking painkillers for your back pain.

Side Effect #1: Nausea

Studies have shown that up to 6% of people taking a normal dose of aspirin experience nausea, heartburn or an upset stomach. This “sick” feeling is usually made worse when painkillers are taken on an empty stomach.

Side Effect #1: Stomach Ulcers/Kidney Problems

Along with nausea, another issue that can be caused by chronic use of pain medications is kidney problems and stomach ulcers. Long-term use of painkillers can cause gradual deterioration of the kidneys.

Early signs of kidney disease include loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue and change in urine output.

Side Effect #1: Drowsiness

The most common side effect that goes along with pain medication is drowsiness. Rather than targeting the specific problem area, painkillers dull the senses, and slow down receptors to the brain. This might help to temporarily relieve some of the pain, but it can also make you feel drowsy and groggy.

Addictive Properties

Most prescription pain medications contain opiates, which is a highly addictive substance. Opioids cause feelings of euphoria and relaxation, which can become dangerously addictive.

While most over the counter drugs are considered “non-habit forming,” it’s still completely possible to become addicted to over the counter drugs. Consistent use for chronic pain management can lead to a painkiller dependency and can cause your body to build up a tolerance to them.

Painkillers are not meant to manage chronic pain. If pain medication must be taken, be sure to take it in small quantities and only to treat acute pain.

The Importance of Exercise and Fitness as We Age

Think about all of the activities you love to do: swimming, golfing, gardening, bike riding, hiking, walking, tennis, visiting with your grandkids. Will you still be able to do these activities in 5 -10 years?

Do to the aging process, our bodies tend to be less resilient. • Lift Weights

How to help someone with back pain

Some tips for helping someone with back pain

Living with chronic back pain can truly be devastating. Back pain can turn seemingly simple, everyday tasks into a chore. If you live with someone who suffers from back pain, it can be frustrating – the feeling of helplessness when watching someone suffer. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to make life easier for those who suffer from back pain.

Rearrange the House

For those who suffer from back pain, simple things such as the layout of their own house can add an increased level of anxiety and pain. If their bedroom is on the second floor, rearrange the house to relocate their bedroom to a downstairs room. Eliminate stairs altogether.

If you need to, rearrange furniture so that there is a clear, direct path from room to room and furniture to furniture.

Invest in some precautionary care items, such as:

  • shower mats
  • a shower chair
  • a handrail in the bathroom
  • a bed cane to assist in easily getting out of bed
  • rubber mats for hard flooring such as tile or wood.

Help with Household Tasks

Without a doubt, the best thing you can do to care for someone with back pain is help out with chores around the house. Many everyday tasks can be painful for someone suffering from back pain; including things like:

  • doing the dishes
  • yard work
  • making the bed
  • grocery shopping
  • laundry
  • mopping floors

If you care for someone with back pain, actions speak louder than words. Don’t just ask them what you can do for them, because often times they will reject help. The best way to help is to show up to their house with a mop, and start mopping.

Show them you Care

Along with physical support, those suffering from chronic pain will also need emotional support. Many people who suffer with back pain also suffer with depression resulting from their inability to live a normal lifestyle. They need people to be patient with them who understand that they’re suffering. Don’t stop at helping with chores, most importantly, be a friend, and a person to talk to. Listen to them, and be flexible, helpful, and accommodating. Here are a few other simple things you can do to show them that you care:

  • Take walks together and slow down. Walk at their pace, rather than rushing them.
  • Be involved in their treatment.
  • Become their exercise buddy; help them do their recommended back pain exercises.
  • Cook them meals or bring them dinner

Bring them to the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic

If someone you love is suffering from chronic back pain, it can be very stressful for both of you. The Davis Spine Institute in The Villages, Florida is here to help relieve back pain. Our back pain treatment is non-surgical and pain-free. You don’t have to live with back pain – call the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic today at (352) 430-2121.

whats keeping you from getting treatmentWe’ve seen patients come in to our office who have had neck or back pain for months, sometimes even years. For one reason or another, they have simply put off seeking medical attention and have just dealt with the pain day to day, limited their activity, and have noticed a diminished quality of life.

When we asked one patient why she put off seeking help, she responded:

“At first it wasn’t that bad, it was more of a discomfort that I was able to ignore most days. As the days turned into weeks and then months, I gradually noticed a little more pain, especially if I overdid it that day. So, instead of getting help, I made sure to stop my activities when I noticed the pain or I would take breaks throughout the day. I was afraid of getting treatment, so I decided to just deal with it. Eventually I got to the point where I was barely living. I stopped my weekly walks with friends because it would aggravate my back, I had my husband do the grocery shopping for me, and I even stopped picking up my grandkids when they came to visit. I got to the point where I didn’t want to do anything because I was in pain. This was not what I imagined my life to be like. We moved to The Villages after retirement because we wanted to be able to enjoy life, however, I was no longer enjoying my life… I was missing out on it! I finally decided that I needed help – that there had to be something I could do. I was no longer afraid of getting treatment, I was more afraid of being in pain the rest of my life!”

Yes, neck and back pain treatment can be scary! Medications can be addictive, steroid injections can hurt, and surgery can have complications and takes months to recover from. And, if you’ve never been treated by a chiropractor, it can probably seem like an intimidating process.  When it comes to chiropractic care, many people are not sure what to expect. But, if you’re experiencing chronic pain, chances are, you will greatly benefit from seeking chiropractic care. For those of you that have never been to a chiropractor, you might have some questions about the process.  Hopefully, this article will help to answer some of these questions:

“I’m not sure what to Expect from Chiropractic Care.”

Don’t worry about seeing a chiropractor; chiropractic treatment is one of the safest options available for the treatment of back pain and neck pain !  Each day, over one million people in the United States are treated by a chiropractor for the relief of pain caused by an auto accident, herniated or degenerative discs , sciatica, facet syndrome, a slip and fall, or from wear and tear.If you’re not sure what to expect, here is what will usually happen at your first chiropractic visit:

1. Your doctor will get a feel for your medical and family history; along with talking about some of the symptoms you’ve been experiencing, and preexisting medical conditions, injuries, etc.

2. Your doctor will then test your basic health and focus on the problem area; testing range of motion, muscle strength, etc.

3. After your doctor has evaluated your conditions, he will diagnose your problems and recommend treatment.

“Aren’t Chiropractor’s Expensive?”

The cost of chiropractic treatments such as spinal decompression are normally less than what you would spend seeking alternative healthcare options, such as surgery, epidurals, and expensive medications.  Chiropractic treatment is a low-cost alternative to treating a wide variety of health conditions.

Plus, if you’ve been experiencing chronic pain, isn’t it worth it to not have to deal with the pain anymore?  You can’t put a price on your pain relief!

“Is a Chiropractor Really Necessary?”

If you have ever experienced chronic back or neck pain, you know that it doesn’t go away on it’s own.  You have probably tried treating it with painkillers, exercising, stretching, and even ignoring it.  But your pain keeps coming back.

The longer you put off managing the pain, the worse it will get. In most situations, Doctors have found that in severe cases, diagnosing the problem earlier would have made all the difference in the world.  In the beginning, most conditions start out as mild annoyances, and only get worse and worse until it is too late. The longer you wait, the worse your pain will get.

Chronic Back Pain May Be Caused by Smoking

Tobacco use is the largest preventable cause of premature death and disease.  In the United States, almost 1 in 3 deaths by cancer are caused by smoking.  Yet, almost 42 million Americans still smoke cigarettes.  The third Thursday of each November marks the celebration of the American Cancer Society’s “Great American Smokeout.”  On this day, smokers are encouraged to make a plan to quit smoking.   Quitting is hard; therefore, each year, the American Cancer Society takes extra measures to make sure that smokers are aware of the many resources and tools that are available to help them quit smoking.

Along with the obvious risk of cancer, and other negative effects that smoking has on your body, there are some lesser-known disadvantages of smoking.

Smoking Can Cause Back Pain

Smoking contributes to atherosclerosis, which is a buildup of plaque in the arteries and blood vessels.  Because of plaque buildup, there is a decrease in blood flow, which can interfere with the back’s ability to heal itself. In this way, smoking can cause severe lower back pain.

In another study by the University of Rochester, it was discovered that smoking is directly related to back pain. Studying over 5,300 patients with back pain, it was found that smokers experienced far more pain than non-smokers. Although the reason is unclear, non-smokers have a higher pain tolerance and are less likely to experience severe, chronic back pain.

What’s stopping you from Quitting?

According to the American Cancer Society, smokers are most successful at kicking the habit when they have support.  For more information on what kind of resources and support are available to help you quit, visit the American Cancer Society’s website at:

If you are ready to make a plan to quit for good, why not join the millions of people participating in the Great American Smokeout, and make November 20th the day you finally quit.

Back Pain Relief on the Road

Traveling with back pain can be frustrating and difficult. For most, the idea of spending a great deal of time on the road, cramped in a car may be enough to ruin your Holidays. However, by taking the appropriate precautions, you can turn your dreaded holiday travels into an enjoyable experience.

Pack Lightly

First, pack as lightly as you can. Do not overload suitcases that you may be lugging around to your destination. Lifting these items may irritate the muscles in your back and create unnecessary pain. If you must bring many things along with you, it is better to pack multiple suitcases with fewer items in each. And remember, always lift with your leg muscles; not your back!

If you will be carrying your luggage around, it might be a good idea to invest in a set of rolling suitcases. The wheels allow you to take a great deal of pressure off of your back and neck.

Proper Posture is the Key to Avoiding Back Pain

Sit properly. To avoid strains, stiffness and soreness, adjust the car seat so that you are sitting in an upright position. However, your seat should not be completely vertical, but slightly tilted back. Having the seat slightly tilted back helps to relieve some of the pressure on your spine.

Take some time to adjust the headrest to the correct height. According to the American Chiropractic Association, over 75 percent of drivers do not have their headrest set to the correct height. This is important as it will support your neck from slight movements caused by acceleration and braking.

Take Breaks to Stretch out your Back, Neck, and Legs

The best thing you can do for your back pain is to take frequent breaks. If you find yourself getting tired, pull over at rest stops or gas stations and get out of the car. Take this opportunity to stretch your legs, arms, back, and neck. Allow your body some time to get back into a natural standing position.

If you are not able to stop at a rest stop and stretch your muscles, take advantage of some of the natural breaks you may have while driving. When sitting at a stop light or waiting on a train, take this time to do some neck exercises such as side to side head turns. Along with that, bend your head so that your ear touches your shoulder on each side. Also, never underestimate the power of cruise control! Allowing your feet to rest comfortably on the floor for a while will help to relieve some of your lower back pain.
