Sciatica pain is excruciating. Sometimes it feels like nothing will soothe your chronic back pain in the interim, but there are many natural remedies for sciatica that are proven to help alleviate your suffering.

Many of these tricks can be done at home with household items that you probably already have on hand.

Hot or Cold Compresses

Resting and compressing is the first way you can remedy your sciatic pain, at least for the time being. Many that struggle with sciatica pain will turn to the heating pad. Resting with the heating pad on the lower back for 15-20 minutes is very helpful with dulling the pain. This is most successful when done several times a day, or every 2-3 hours. Moist heat is a great method for getting heat to penetrate the muscles best and some people feel that it provides better pain relief than dry heat.

Ice often works just as well, and some people prefer this method. Applying ice will reduce swelling around the nerve and numb the pain. Similar to heat, icing the affected area should be done every couple hours to ensure relief.

Be Active

After applying heat or ice to get some relief, it is time to get moving! Exercise is one of the best natural remedies for sciatica. A great way to do this is by alternating periods of sitting/lying down with short walks. A pedometer or fitness tracker is a great tool to track how many steps you are doing each day and it will motivate you to be more active and increase your walking distance.

While some exercise can aggravate sciatica pain there are others that can be very beneficial.. Lengthening the spine through stretching and yoga can help to reduce stiffness, inflammation, and pain.

Massage Therapy

Relaxation Nation, here we come! Massage therapy is not just a method of relaxation but also natural remedies for sciatica. Massage therapy can help relax muscles that surround and put pressure on your sciatic nerve.

Consider trigger-point massage therapy. Pain in the lower back, buttocks, and side of the thighs is often associated with trigger points in the gluteus medius and minimus muscles. Massaging these areas specifically will focus on where you feel pain.

Massage therapy can release natural endorphins, or “feel good” chemicals, that can be helpful for pain management. Another one of the awesome natural remedies for sciatica.

Natural Spices

Tumeric, ginger, and apple cider vinegar are awesome natural remedies for sciatica. Tumeric is a potent painkiller and a natural anti-inflammatory. Try drinking turmeric in warm milk or applying it directly to the skin mixed with lemon juice and salt. Ginger works as a natural anti-inflammatory as well. Drinking ginger tea a few times a day or wrapping it in a warm paper towel and applying directly to the affected area can work wonders. Apple cider vinegar can be added directly to a warm bath to soak the pain away. It is also helpful when consumed with hot water and honey.

Take it easy

While this may be difficult for particularly active people, one of the most sure-fire ways to relieve sciatic pain is by abstaining from rigorous activity. You will not have to be entirely immobile, but it will be helpful to rest every so often to ensure that you don’t overdo it.

Exercise is a good thing and will be helpful when you are having a flare-up of sciatica but you should not be doing any strenuous workouts. Steer clear of gym workouts and substitute them for more natural workouts like walking, running, or swimming.

DRS Protocol

The DRS Protocol is a safe, effective, and non-surgical treatment available only at Davis Clinic of Chiropractic. It includes spinal decompressions and a multitude of other natural remedies to help the patients needs. DRS stands for decompression, reduction, stabilization and it reduces the pressure inside the disc that is causing the pain. This treatment is an excellent alternative for those who are not interested in having neck or back surgery for their sciatic nerve pain.

Try any of these natural remedies for sciatica and you will be on your way to pain-free living.

Everything you Need to Know about Sciatica

If you suffer from back pain, there’s a chance it may be one of the symptoms of a more serious condition called sciatica. So, what is sciatica? In this article, Davis Clinic of Chiropractic will tell you everything you need to know about sciatica, including what sciatic pain is, what it feels like, and how to treat it.

What is Sciatica?

The sciatic nerve is a nerve that runs from your lower back, through the buttocks, and down the back of the leg. When something obstructs or puts pressure on the sciatic nerve, this causes pain in the lower back, hips, buttocks, and more: a condition known as sciatica.

The causes of sciatica typically range from normal wear and tear to herniated disks, spinal stenosis, and in some severe cases: tumors. Anything that can cause pressure to be put on the sciatic nerve can be a culprit of sciatica, making it difficult to diagnose the exact cause.

What Sciatic Pain Feels Like

Sciatica can cause symptoms very similar to more common back pains. However, there’s usually one dead giveaway that might suggest you are experiencing sciatica. Sciatic pain typically extends down through the leg, rather than stopping at the hip. Because the sciatic nerve runs all the way down your leg, sciatic pain has often been described as a “shooting pain” down the leg.

Other symptoms of sciatic pain include:

  • “numbness” in your legs
  • tingling sensations (such as when your leg falls asleep.)
  • severe lower back pain
  • pain radiating through the buttocks/thigh
  • leg cramps

How to Treat Sciatic Pain

A few home remedies exist that can greatly reduce the pain brought on by sciatica. One treatment method might include hot and cold therapy. Lay down with an ice pack on the affected area for twenty minutes, then switch to a heating pad.

Another way to keep your sciatic pain to a minimum is staying active. Contrary to popular belief, moderate exercise and stretching can do wonders for sciatic pain. A chiropractor can help you find the perfect stretches that will most effectively alleviate pain for your particular situation.

what is SCIATICASome Signs that what you’re experiencing is Sciatica

The human spine is a very complex structure made up of many components. Because of this, it can be hard to diagnose a specific issue. There are many things that could be causing your back pain – herniated or degenerative discs, muscle tears or strains, or sciatica. The symptoms of each of these conditions may vary, but if you are experiencing back pain, there are usually some telltale signs that it may very well be sciatica.

In order to diagnose sciatica, we have to know what causes it. Between each bone that makes up your spine is a soft pad that provides cushioning. These pads (discs) consist of a jelly-like interior, covered with a harder exterior. A herniated disc is when the interior of the disc pushes out of the harder exterior, resulting in discomfort and sometimes irritation of nearby nerves.

Symptoms of Sciatica:

1. Burning or Tingling Sensation Down One Leg

When a herniated disc or disc degeneration compresses part of a nearby nerve, it can cause severe pain, numbness, or burning and tingling sensations in the lower back, buttocks, and down the leg.

2. Difficulty Standing

A common effect of sciatica is difficulty standing after prolonged periods of sitting. Sometimes the pinched nerves can cause a shooting pain down your spine and legs when trying to stand up.

3. Pain in the Leg or Buttocks

Most commonly, sciatica will cause a pain in the buttocks, and down the backs of the leg. Try lying on your back and lifting each of your legs one at a time. If this activity creates a shooting pain down one of your legs, you may be dealing with sciatica.

4. Pain Radiating Down One Side of Your Body

Sciatica refers to an interruption in the sciatic nerve – a nerve that travels down from the lower back, to the hips, buttocks, and down the leg. Because of this, it is very common to experience pain in only one leg. Rarely does sciatica effect both legs.

5. Stinging or “Electric Shock” Sensation in Lower Back

In most cases, because sciatica is causes by a damaged or pinched nerve, an “electric shock” or “stinging” sensation is common in sciatica patients. Damaged nerves can often make it feel like your muscles are being “shocked.”

whats keeping you from getting treatmentWe’ve seen patients come in to our office who have had neck or back pain for months, sometimes even years. For one reason or another, they have simply put off seeking medical attention and have just dealt with the pain day to day, limited their activity, and have noticed a diminished quality of life.

When we asked one patient why she put off seeking help, she responded:

“At first it wasn’t that bad, it was more of a discomfort that I was able to ignore most days. As the days turned into weeks and then months, I gradually noticed a little more pain, especially if I overdid it that day. So, instead of getting help, I made sure to stop my activities when I noticed the pain or I would take breaks throughout the day. I was afraid of getting treatment, so I decided to just deal with it. Eventually I got to the point where I was barely living. I stopped my weekly walks with friends because it would aggravate my back, I had my husband do the grocery shopping for me, and I even stopped picking up my grandkids when they came to visit. I got to the point where I didn’t want to do anything because I was in pain. This was not what I imagined my life to be like. We moved to The Villages after retirement because we wanted to be able to enjoy life, however, I was no longer enjoying my life… I was missing out on it! I finally decided that I needed help – that there had to be something I could do. I was no longer afraid of getting treatment, I was more afraid of being in pain the rest of my life!”

Yes, neck and back pain treatment can be scary! Medications can be addictive, steroid injections can hurt, and surgery can have complications and takes months to recover from. And, if you’ve never been treated by a chiropractor, it can probably seem like an intimidating process.  When it comes to chiropractic care, many people are not sure what to expect. But, if you’re experiencing chronic pain, chances are, you will greatly benefit from seeking chiropractic care. For those of you that have never been to a chiropractor, you might have some questions about the process.  Hopefully, this article will help to answer some of these questions:

“I’m not sure what to Expect from Chiropractic Care.”

Don’t worry about seeing a chiropractor; chiropractic treatment is one of the safest options available for the treatment of back pain and neck pain !  Each day, over one million people in the United States are treated by a chiropractor for the relief of pain caused by an auto accident, herniated or degenerative discs , sciatica, facet syndrome, a slip and fall, or from wear and tear.If you’re not sure what to expect, here is what will usually happen at your first chiropractic visit:

1. Your doctor will get a feel for your medical and family history; along with talking about some of the symptoms you’ve been experiencing, and preexisting medical conditions, injuries, etc.

2. Your doctor will then test your basic health and focus on the problem area; testing range of motion, muscle strength, etc.

3. After your doctor has evaluated your conditions, he will diagnose your problems and recommend treatment.

“Aren’t Chiropractor’s Expensive?”

The cost of chiropractic treatments such as spinal decompression are normally less than what you would spend seeking alternative healthcare options, such as surgery, epidurals, and expensive medications.  Chiropractic treatment is a low-cost alternative to treating a wide variety of health conditions.

Plus, if you’ve been experiencing chronic pain, isn’t it worth it to not have to deal with the pain anymore?  You can’t put a price on your pain relief!

“Is a Chiropractor Really Necessary?”

If you have ever experienced chronic back or neck pain, you know that it doesn’t go away on it’s own.  You have probably tried treating it with painkillers, exercising, stretching, and even ignoring it.  But your pain keeps coming back.

The longer you put off managing the pain, the worse it will get. In most situations, Doctors have found that in severe cases, diagnosing the problem earlier would have made all the difference in the world.  In the beginning, most conditions start out as mild annoyances, and only get worse and worse until it is too late. The longer you wait, the worse your pain will get.

You Don’t Have to Accept Back Pain

Do you feel that back pain is just a part of getting older? Whereas back pain may be more evident in adults than in younger people, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they go hand-in-hand. There are some simple steps you can take in order to help rid yourself of back pain.

Natural Pain Relief

First, start by maintaining good posture. If you have a “sit down” job where you are at your desk all day, make sure your chair is ergonomically correct. In other words, make sure the chair is set up right for your height and job function. If you work on a computer most of the day, your computer screen should be at eye level. The chair should be set so that both feet are able to touch the floor.

Next, limit the amount of time you spend in bed. Studies show that people who are more active on a daily routine tend to feel less pain than those who stay in bed. Staying in bed may provide temporary relief. However, the long term effects are stiffness and soreness.

 Exercises for Back Pain Relief

Exercising is another remedy that has great side benefits. In addition to keeping your muscles limber, it will improve your blood circulation and help you maintain a healthy weight. Be careful not to overdo the exercises. Avoid bending and twisting as those activities may have been what caused the back pain to begin with. A simple walk is a good way to start your exercise routine.

Using cold and hot packs can help reduce the pain as well. If your back pain is due to an injury, use ice for the first 48 hours to reduce the swelling then switch to heat. The heat will provide a soothing effect that will comfort the muscles and provide for extended relief.

Non-Surgical Back and Neck Pain Treatment

Finally, if you have severe or chronic back pain, see a professional. Doctors, such as Dr. Jason Davis of the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic, in the Villages, Florida , specializes in the diagnoses and treatment of back pain conditions that are causing you discomfort, such as herniated discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis, and more. Dr. Davis is highly trained in treating back pain without surgery, epidurals, or other invasive treatments, including the highly effective, DRS Protocol.

Remember, just because we are getting older, does not mean that we have to accept the aches and pains that some may say are symptoms of getting older. Following these simple techniques and obtaining the advice of a professional chiropractor may be the answer to enjoying a productive and pain free lifestyle. If you are tired of living with pack pain, call the Villages Chiropractor, Dr. Jason Davis today at (352) 430-2121.

What is Sciatia?

what is sciaticaThe pain you feel starting at your buttocks and radiating down through your leg to your feet could be sciatica. Quite often leg pain or foot pain does not mean that there is a problem in your foot or leg, but rather that there is a problem in your low back causing pain and possibly other symptoms.

Sciatica refers to the pain felt along the length of the sciatic nerve. The pain is usually felt in the buttock where it radiates down the leg.

Causes of Sciatica

It’s important to understand that sciatica is a symptom of a problem. Something could be compressing or irritating the nerve roots that comprise the sciatic nerve. If you suddenly start to feel pain in your lower back or hip that radiates to the back of your thigh and into your leg, you may have a protruding or herniated disc in your spinal column that is pressing on the roots of the sciatic nerve.

Sciatica can also be caused by degenerative disc disease or a misalignment of the spine resulting in the compression of the sciatic nerve.

Symptoms of Sciatica

Common symptoms of sciatica can include:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Burning pain, numbness or tingling down the leg
  • Pain that travels from the lower back into the buttocks and down the back of the thigh
  • Significant leg pain.

Non-surgical Treatment for Sciatica

It is important to understand that sciatica is not a diagnosis or medical disorder, but rather a symptom of a larger problem that will need to be treated in order to relieve sciatic nerve pain.

The Villages Chiropractor, Dr. Jason Davis of the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic, will first identify the cause of the nerve compression before recommending treatment. He has had great success in the treatment of sciatica without surgery or medications utilizing the pain-free DRS Protocol.

If you’re suffering with sciatic pain, call the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic today to at (352) 430-2121 find out if you’re a candidate for the DRS Protocol.
