Is the back and/or neck pain you deal with every day making you miss out on important life events? Did you see your regular doctor and was told surgery was your only option? In most cases, surgery is not your only option! You may be able to live a pain-free life, without surgery or medication. This is where the need for a chiropractor comes into play.

Chiropractors are trained professionals who care for patients specifically with health problems of the neuromusculoskeletal system.

If the pain is too much to bear and you’re ready for a change, read these tips to find the best chiropractor for you.

How to Know When You Need One

The most common misconception about chiropractors is that they only know how to treat backs and necks. Let them find the best care treatment for you based on your condition.

If You Suffer From…

  • Chronic back pain
  • Chronic neck pain
  • Herniated discs
  • Degenerative discs
  • Sciatica
  • Facet syndrome
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Injuries caused by an accident
  • Knee pain
  • Neuropathy

Did you nod your head ‘yes’ to any condition(s) listed above? Now it’s time to find who’s right for you.

How Can I Find the Best Chiropractor Near Me?

Finding a good chiropractor requires some research. Review websites are helpful for seeing which professionals are in your area. Ask friends and family or even a physical therapist for referrals.

After you’ve narrowed it down to a few potential options, it’s time to take a look at their experience.

Understand Their Area of Expertise

Making sure you choose the best chiropractor for you and your condition(s) is an important factor. Normally, if they have a website, you can find an about page with information on the doctors.

Sometimes, the practice will have multiple doctors working within it because they all have experience with different health conditions. It’s best to call and ask for a consultation.

One thing to remember: make sure they have a licensure. This entails if the chiropractor has the proper training and skills.

Questions to Ask

It’s always good to know who will be treating you. Here are some questions to ask to ensure you choose the best chiropractor suited for you.

  • What technique does he or she use and why?
  • Do they use their hands or an instrument?
  • Are they experienced in treating problems similar to yours?
  • How many years have they been in practice?

Don’t allow just anyone to treat you. You need a professional who’s qualified and has the experience.

obesity and back pain

How Weight Loss Can Help Reduce Back Pain

By now, you’ve probably heard all about the negative effects of being overweight – risk of heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, and trouble breathing, to name a few. But, now there is one more side effect to add to the list – back pain.

Body Fat’s Effect on Joints

The American Obesity Association recently found that musculoskeletal pain (such as back pain) is 20% more likely to occur in those who are classified as obese.

Your body puts up with a lot on any given day. Each extra pound adds to the stress on your spine, which puts additional pressure on the soft tissue around your vertebrae. And, being overweight can shift your body’s center of gravity forward, which puts excess strain on your back muscles.

Along with the additional stress that goes along with weight gain, excess fat can also cause your spine to become unnaturally curved as it pulls your pelvis forward, which causes forward pressure on your spine.

Body Fat’s Effect on Your Body’s Natural Chemicals

Not only does belly fat put additional strain on your spine, it also causes excess release of inflammatory chemicals in your body. One of these chemicals is known as cortisol – a stress-induced chemical that promotes the storage of fat and increases the number of fat cells. Each of these fat cells releases inflammatory chemicals which weaken discs in the spine.

Not only do inflammatory chemicals slowly break down your spine, they also increase the risk of Metabolic Syndrome – a common precursor to heart disease and diabetes.

How to Reduce Back Pain Caused by Excess Weight

If you suffer from back pain, there’s a very real chance that it could be exacerbated by excess weight. If this is the case, then the best way to ease back pain is to start losing weight. But don’t take our word for it – Chiropractor, Dr. Jason Davis of the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic in The Villages® community says:

“Staying within ten pounds of your recommended weight can do wonders for your spine. Some back pain may be avoidable –simply by maintaining a healthy weight.”

How do you maintain a healthy weight, you ask? The answer is much simpler than most would like – eat less and move more. But, it’s not just eating less, it’s eating less of the wrong foods and eating more of the right foods. Including anti-inflammatory foods to help fight pain. Unfortunately, there’s no miracle pill or overnight cure.

Weight Loss Program The Villages® Community

Maintaining a healthy weight may be hard, but you do not have to do it alone! The Davis Clinic of Chiropractic offers an amazing new treatment called Zerona Laser Therapy – a new treatment that helps kickstart your body’s fat burning capabilities. When used in conjunction with diet and exercise, Zerona Laser Therapy has allowed some of our patients to lose up to 40 pounds in 6 weeks!

Not only is Zerona completely effective, it’s also completely safe! Zerona is the only weight loss solution of It’s kind that has been approved by the FDA as completely safe!

If you suffer from back pain caused by excess body fat and weight, we can help you shed those pounds and relieve your pain. Contact us today at (352) 430-2121 to schedule an appointment to find out more about our weight loss program and back pain treatments.

During Valentine’s Day, it’s great to take some time to focus on all of our loved ones – family, friends, children, back…. Wait, what was that last one? Back? Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten what it’s like to be in love with your back! Let’s face it – over time, our bodies can let us down as we get older. It seems like with age comes more and more back pain – but it doesn’t have to be that way.

This Valentine’s Day, take some time to remember why you fell in love with your back in the first place.

  1. it supports you
  2. it bends over backward for you
  3. it moves you

But, treated poorly, or due to wear and tear, it can cause you pain. Show your back you love with these ways to minimize the strain put on your back.

The first thing you can do for your back is exercise. If you suffer from back pain, a light workout will do wonders for your spine. It might seem counterintuitive, but exercise is a crucial step to maintaining growth and promoting healing. The stretching of muscles greatly speeds up the tissue repair process. Not to mention, maintaining a healthy weight will reduce muscle strain and drastically minimize back pain. But take it easy and consult with your doctor first.

Similarly, we’ve also found that Yoga is an amazing exercise for not only the body but also the mind. Get ready for the day by spending a few minutes stretching or doing yoga first thing in the morning. You will be surprised by how much this will help your back pain and your overall mood.

Hot and Cold Therapy

If you’re still experiencing pain after a moderate exercise, try lying down on top of a heating pad or an ice pack. Hot and Cold therapy is a great way to keep pain to a minimum. Try experimenting with both hot and cold temperatures and see which one works best for you.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. At rest, your body begins to repair strained muscles and more! If you wake up with back pain, it could very well be your sleeping position. Experiment with different sleeping positions and see which one works best for you. An effective sleeping position for people with back pain is on your side with a pillow between your knees.

problem with painkillers

Prescription Painkiller Abuse

During National Chiropractic Health Month, we’re taking a look at the public health crisis caused by pain, and in particular the overuse of prescription painkillers. Prescription drug abuse is the number one cause of death in 17 U.S. states, surpassing motor vehicle accidents.

Numerous recent studies have shown the dangerous over reliance in the United States on prescription painkillers. Did you know that although Americans only make up 4.5% of the world’s population, they consume 80% of the world’s opioid supply? That means of all of the prescription painkillers in the world; Americans consume 80% of them! Over the last 20 years, there has been a 10-fold increase in the use of prescription painkillers. The United States is experiencing a national crisis – painkiller dependency, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has declared an “epidemic.”

During 2013 alone, drug overdoses accounted for almost 44,000 deaths in the United States, an increase of 6% from 2012. So what’s going on? Why does the United States have such a problem with prescription painkillers?

Well, for one, it’s never been easier to get a prescription for drugs. Studies have shown that 48% of Americans have used at least one prescription drug in the last 30 days. Even more shocking – 1 in 10 Americans admit to having used at least 5 prescription drugs in the last 30 days. This can multiply the risk for drug-related health issues exponentially.

“We know that the number of adverse drug events a patient is likely to experience increases as the number of medications they are taking increases,” says Anne Burns, Senior Vice President for Professional affairs at the American Pharmacists Association. “You’ve got everything from potential interactions between medications to timing issues, taking a variety of medications throughout the day.”

This shows that not only are many Americans using prescription drugs, but also they’re overusing them in dangerous combinations.

Another reason that painkillers are so readily available for many people is the lack of attention by many medical professionals. Although this prescription drug problem exists, many Doctors are still willing to give patients prescriptions, even if they aren’t necessary. A common trend that exists among opiate drug users is that they will experience an injury or an accident that will require prescription painkillers. But, rather than using painkillers as a temporary way to manage the pain, they become dependent on them. The fact is – most painkillers have very addictive properties.

Pain Treatment without Medications

Although there may be times that a prescription drug may be needed, painkillers do not treat the condition, they only mask the pain. So, with approximately 10 million Americans suffer with chronic, persistent or disabling pain, what’s the solution?  Many conditions, such as chronic back pain, neck pain, knee pain, and neuropathy, can be treated without drugs and the side effects of taking prescription painkillers.

At the Davis Clinic of Chiropractic in The Villages, Florida, we provide an alternative to drugs and invasive procedures. Our treatment for chronic pain conditions doesn’t mask the pain, it treats it. We have helped thousands of patients find relief from back pain, neck pain, knee pain and the numbness and debilitating symptoms of neuropathy, and we can help you relieve your chronic pain once and for all.
