A herniated disc – also known as a slipped disc, bulging disc, or ruptured disc, is a painful condition and a common cause of back pain or neck pain.
Discs are located between the vertebrae (bones of the spine) and act as shock absorbers for the spine. A herniated disc occurs when the outer disc wall (annulus fibrosis) bulges or tears allowing the jelly-like center of the disc (nucleus pulposus) to spill out pressing on surrounding nerves.
